Remember every day in the spring and summer, that little guy woke you up in the morning? You would stare at him sometimes for hours, realizing how beautiful he is. Then you go out to the garden and you find something - a disaster.
Birds can often be a huge problem for your garden. They will tear apart leafy plants for their nests, they will eat your berries, and they will scratch the ground where your new seedlings are. Don't worry though, here's some cool things you can do to scare them off and keep them out of your garden. The very first step, which is the easiest - keep your bird feeders, baths, and houses away from your garden. As far away as possible. You wouldn't want to have them enjoying strawberries while taking a bath, would you? If you grow corn in your garden, you know birds can just ruin it quick. Here's one fix - take a can of soup, remove the lid, empty the soup and wash the can. Then drill about 2 dozen holes all over the can and slide it on to your ears of corn. A good way to scare off birds from your garden is to take a garbage bag, some string, and a stake. Fill the garbage bag with air and tie it shut - then tie it to the stake. Stick it in the ground and watch it fly around in the wind. If you still have issues with birds eating your growing fruits and vegetables, take some panty hose and slip it over the fruit. Then just tie the open end loosely around the stem. Another way to scare the birds away is to cut strips, circles, stars - just about any shape - out of aluminum foil. This can be fun for kids. Now place 2 stakes, a good distance apart, just inches in front of your garden. Tie a string, connecting the 2 stakes, just a few inches above the average height of your plants. Now tape all of the cut out shapes on the string, and like before, watch it fly in the wind. The glare from the foil will stop the birds from landing in your garden. As I mentioned earlier, we all love watching the birds. Make sure you do set up a feeder, bath, and a house so you can watch them. You don't just want to scare them off completely. Take these simple, cheap steps and protect your garden, it will all pay off! |
